Health coaching is a new paradigm in healthcare intended to meet the needs of people actively seeking to improve their well-being in the midst of complex and often confusing healthcare options. It is a client-driven process, best serving individuals seeking to improve their health or relationships, and become more connected with their true selfs. It is practiced from a holistic perspective that sees each person as intrinsically healthy, whole, wise, and the ultimate expert in his or her healing journey. If you are reading this, you have perhaps tried other “quick-fix” tools, and are aware that real change requires courage, new levels of awareness, evidence, and ongoing consistent support.
Integrative health coaching (IHC) applies the principles of integrative medicine and a motivational coaching process to engage clients with attaining self-determined goals.
Integrative health coaching facilitates behavior change in a structured, supportive partnership between the participant and the coach. The coach invites insights and clarity through inquiry and personal discovery. A coach focuses on the mind, body, and spirit and helps clients make the changes that support a healthier lifestyle. Sessions take place in person or by telephone.
Although Health Coaches do not diagnose or treat illnesses, they can assist patients with enhancing their health and changing lifestyle patterns. This assistance includes referrals and the assembly of an optimal, interdisciplinary healthcare team. The ability to perform this function requires that a Health Coach have a comfortable working knowledge of both conventional and complementary healthcare. Ideally, coaches work preventatively with individuals to set optimal life choices and paths prior to the occurrence of negative physical or mental conditions.
