Overacting Thyroid, Chinese Herbs, and 44 Studies Walk Into a Meta-Analysis
A newly published meta-analysis of 44 clinical trials suggests that combining traditional Chinese herbal formulas with standard treatment for Graves' disease may improve thyroid and immune markers while causing fewer side effects than medication alone. Researchers also identified the specific herbs and biological pathways that may be doing the work.

Summer Heat (暑邪): A Traditional Chinese Medicine Guide to Beating DC's Humid Season
As summer intensifies in humid Washington DC, many people experience a cluster of symptoms — grogginess, headaches, swollen extremities, itchy eyes, and digestive upset — that Traditional Chinese Medicine identifies as 暑邪 (shǔ xié), or "Summer Heat." This article offers practical, time-tested remedies for cooling and draining excess heat and dampness from the body, including seasonal foods like purslane, pearl barley congee, and ripe tomatoes, along with cooling teas, midday rest on rattan mats, and traditional incense practices from Vietnam and Japan. Exploring The Nutritional Benefits Of Currants: The Under-Appreciated Berry Superfood
Dr. Kogan's recent YouTube video from Larriland Farm spotlights currants, an often-overlooked berry with remarkable nutritional value. They are the highest commercially available food source of omega-6 in the U.S., exceptionally rich in vitamin C, and packed with antioxidants linked to anti-aging and preliminary cancer research. Currants make a valuable and flavorful addition to a health-conscious diet.

Dr. Kogan does a TEDxCornell: Rethinking What's Possible in Alzheimer's Care
In a new TEDxCornell talk, Dr. Mikhail Kogan, Chief Medical Officer at GWCIM, makes the case that Alzheimer's disease is not always the irreversible, one-directional path it's long been assumed to be. Drawing on nearly two decades in geriatrics and integrative medicine, he explains how addressing inflammation, sleep, nutrition, stress, and environmental exposures has helped some patients stabilize and even regain cognitive function.

In this video, we review a major JAMA Network Open study examining whether state cannabis legalization was associated with increased psychosis-related healthcare utilization — and discuss what the findings actually showed.

Do Alzheimer’s Drugs Really Work? New Review Says Benefits Are ‘Trivial’—Here’s What Matters More
A major new systematic review is challenging the narrative around Alzheimer’s medications. Are drugs like lecanemab and donanemab truly changing outcomes—or offering only modest benefits? In this video, Dr. Mikhail Kogan (George Washington University Center for Integrative Medicine) breaks down the latest evidence, including a large meta-analysis of over 20,000 patients, and explains what it really means for patients, families, and clinicians. While newer anti-amyloid therapies may slow decline slightly, the overall clinical impact remains debated—especially when weighed against risks like brain swelling (ARIA), cost, and treatment burden. More importantly, we discuss what does move the needle: a comprehensive, root-cause approach to cognitive decline—addressing inflammation, metabolic health, toxins, sleep, and more.

Integrative Geriatric Medicine (Weil Integrative Medicine Library)
Integrative geriatrics is a new field of medicine that advocates for a whole-person, patient-centered, primarily non-pharmacological approach to medical care of the elderly. Most current geriatric practices overprescribe medications and procedures and underutilize non-pharmacological, low-cost, high-touch methods. Patients, however, often show reluctance towards these standard practices, as the interventions they rely upon are often invasive. The practice of integrative geriatrics is rooted in lifestyle interventions, such as nutrition, movement therapies, and mind-body and spirituality approaches, that allow patients to have different path to their healthcare-one that utilizes pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures only when safer integrative approaches are not available or not effective. This first definitive textbook of this new field presents detailed, evidence-based information for all healthcare providers and advocates who work with geriatric population. It is intended not only for providers in outpatient settings, but also to those who work in nursing homes, assisted and independent living facilities, and senior community centers. In addition, Integrative Geriatric Medicine will provide valuable information for leaders and politicians who are involved with implementing policies and procedures for care of elderly patients looking for safer, less costly, and more patient-centered approaches.

Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-Based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD
An essential guide to understanding the health benefits of marijuana and CBD Marijuana has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, but pot has been illegal in the United States for most of our lives. Almost all states have now legalized its medical use, and many consumers and physicians are exploring it as an alternative to conventional treatments. There’s substantial evidence that marijuana (cannabis) is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, chemo side effects, sleep and mood disorders, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. But there’s also misinformation about marijuana on social media. And most physicians have limited knowledge on the subject, while dispensary staff (aka “budtenders”) lack medical training.
